Working for my Grub

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

I’m a former student, current sometimes-instructor, blog advice columnist and all-around booster of the fabulous Grub Street Writersthe place in Boston for writing classes, events, and resources for writers. It’s through Grub that I met many of my closest writer pals and acquaintances, including Jami Brandli, Ellen Litman, Steve Almond, Randy Susan Meyers, Jenna Blum, Lisa Borders, Jon Papernick, and countless others. It is, quite simply, the heart of my writing community.

But enough gushing. More to the point: I will be hosting a “Jumpstart your writing” mini-workshop at Grub’s Muse and the Marketplace conference, April 30-May 1 at the Park Plaza in Boston. Here’s the description:

Jumpstart Your Fiction Writing

3:45pm-4:45pm on Saturday, April 30th

What better way to end the day than by producing new work to take home with you? The session leader will provide unique and inspiring prompts that get you brainstorming ideas for new stories and writing new scenes. The focus will be on creating memorable characters and settings, inventing plots and improving dialogue.

For more information about the conference — which will include an appearance by none other than Oscar host extraordinaire (cough cough) and hottie James Franco — visit the Grub Street Website.

In other Grub News, you can see my latest post as a Friday Five-0 advice columnist at The Grub Daily. This week’s post: how much can you “make up” if you don’t remember exact details when you’re writing a memoir or personal essay? Check out my bizarre take on the subject, and weigh in.
