From Publishers Weekly
In 1968, Clay Perry founded Eden Lake as a utopian summer
camp, but 30 years later Clay and his second wife are killed in a plane
crash, leaving it up to their children to keep the dream going. An
absorbing family drama, the novel alternates between the stories and
histories of the children: Abe, the firstborn and true heir to his
parents' idealism, who leaves his burgeoning non-profit to take his
father's role as camp director; Jude, running from an adulterous affair
and feeling guilty about her estrangement from her father; Eric, the
dreamy youngest, trapped by his own fear of the unknown and desire to
be loved; and Aura, Clay's step-daughter, determined not to repeat her
mother's mistakes. Camp Eden Lake comes to life as the summer
progresses and the children cope with human dramas -- falling in and
out of love, uncovering family secrets, reconsidering their pasts,
deciding the future of the camp and preserving the happiness of the
children in their care. The clean writing and natural dialogue bring
the place and characters to life; the campers are as well drawn and
sympathetic as the major players, and the camp, like the novel itself,
hums and moves with seemingly effortless energy.
