Now that I’ve processed and decided to leave my Make-a-Wish guilt behind, I’m getting really excited for our trip to Disney and Universal Studios.
Alastair has been hitting the guidebooks, and a friend of a friend who helps people plan Disney vacations, via her company Kingdom Planners, has provided some great tips and sample itineraries (thank you!). Reading about the specifics is helping to dissolve our misanthropic distaste for theme parks, and anti-establishment suspicion of the corporate juggernaut that is the Disney company.
It’s also reviving fond memories of the two trips my family took to Disney World when I was a young kid, times when we went to visit my grandparents, who had a condo in St. Petersburg.
One of my most vivid memories — one I’ve never really forgotten — is from the first time we went, when I was in kindergarten. It was an evening visit, and I donned my most beautiful dress to ride Prince Charming’s Carousel. I chose the horse with all the flowers on it (which I assumed was supposed to be Cinderella’s) and rode side saddle, for the most princess-y possible effect.
But then I felt like people, including my parents, were watching and smiling at me in a fond, isn’t-she-cute sort of way, for attempting to be so damned princess-y, and I got embarrassed. I wished that, at the very least, I hadn’t done the stupid side saddle thing.
I know. Was I the world’s most self-conscious five-year-old or WHAT?
I’ve come a long way since then. And yet, like that overly self-aware, five-year-old half-hearted princess of yore, I’m feeling a little self-conscious about one aspect of our upcoming Disney trip: The notion of being there as one of those families, with our big, blue blue Make-a-Wish buttons crying out WE HAVE CANCER! Or even without the buttons: while Clio has a nice little head of hair on her now, it’s still very short, and she still chooses to wear a hat, so I think most people probably guess what’s going on.
It can be draining to have people looking at you all the time with those fond or pitying looks — even when you know that it’s coming from the kindest and most generous and empathetic place in their hearts. It’s hard to feel like their ears are perked to your conversations (yes, parents have to parent their child with cancer sometimes, dammit!), and their eyes are perked (?!) to what you’re doing.
It’s hard have that constant, external reminder of the situation you’re in — a situation I honestly still can’t believe we’re in sometimes. We’re going to Disney World with the Make-a-Wish Foundation? Us?? WTF?! (You may tell yourself: This is not my beautiful house! This is not my beautiful wife!)
And, hell, I don’t want to remind other people of the situation we and others like us are in. I suspect there are folks out there who, like I used to, have the misconception that Make-a-Wish is only for children who are terminally ill. I mean, jeez, I don’t want to make anybody cry at the happiest place on earth!! There’s no crying in Disney!
On the upside, I suppose, we might have the effect of making people who see us thank the Lord for their blessings and hug their children and stop getting quite as exasperated with them for a few hours (aw, what the heck, sweetheart, sure you can get ice cream right before dinner.). Which is a nice effect to have.
And maybe some of them donate to childhood cancer research or wish granting organizations and they’ll think: Yes. This is what it’s all about. Or maybe some of them will be inspired to donate in the future, which is also excellent.
On the other hand, maybe we’ll just piss everyone off because we get to go ahead of them in line. Heh.
On a related note, moving away from me as self-conscious thirty-nine-going-on-five-year-old, there is another kind of attention that I’m actually more apprehensive about: The attention that I suspect (from experience) many people — from ride operators to freakin’ Ariel and Goofy — may heap on Clio but not on Elsa.
It’s already beginning: Even the confirmation letters we’ve gotten for our trip say CLIO’S WISH TRIP! in big bold letters. Which, of course, makes perfect sense. I mean, she’s the one with cancer, for Pete’s sake. It is her trip. And she’s the one who has suffered the brunt of all this, from a physical standpoint.
But as I’ve written here before, I don’t think most people realize just how hard cancer is on the “well” siblings. Imagine you’re five, six, seven, and your twin sister gets twice as much one-on-one mom or dad time as you. Imagine you miss out on planned vacations and activities because they aren’t possible thanks to your sibling’s illness. Imagine you have to deal with your sister being an abject jerk to you one week out of every three because she’s hopped up on steroids.
Most of all, imagine your sister is constantly being treated like a star while you get ignored, through no fault of your own (or any particular talent of hers). Imagine that half the time she gets gifts but you don’t. Imagine that sometimes it’s like people don’t even see you.
I have to give Elsa a lot of credit, though. She has gotten to a point where she can step outside herself and understand the whole thing. She knows — because we’ve talked with her about it time and time again — that a lot of people mean very well, but they just don’t understand. They’re not ignoring her on purpose, and it doesn’t mean she’s any less special and brave than Clio.
Not that it makes it any easier; but I think she has started to take a more empowered stance. She’ll tell people outright that she’s there. “I’m her twin sister, and I’m really brave, too.” A lot of people don’t get it even then. But it makes me really proud of her for standing up for herself.
And, of course, we advocate for her constantly. It’s a tricky balancing act, figuring out how to do it so that people get the point, but don’t feel guilty. I just wish more people got it off the bat.
So listen, you flight attendants, you hotel staff, you roving Disney characters. Your kindness and generosity are most welcome and appreciated. But I am praying and hoping that you will see my other daughter, and make her feel special too.
Now excuse me; I have to go iron my princess dress.
Jane, a beautiful and poignant message as always. How right you are that most people do not
understand that both twins must be recognized, no matter what. However, the fact that you DO and that Elsa is getting it bodes well for everyone. Talking openly about these feelings and circumstances is so healthy and healing. Have so much fun!!

Disney makes every little girl feel special. The princesses are amazing. They get down on their level and call them Princess and talk to them and smile at them and it is awesome. They do it to EVERY little girl they encounter sick or well, rich or poor, big or small. Trust me I doubt they will leave Elsa out. The characters are specifically trained to give all little kids attention.
I have been to Disney a bunch of times and honestly never remember seeing a Make a Wish kid so most likely you will not attract that much attention. I think people are so busy looking at everything to look at and doing their own thing, they don’t much notice other families even those getting special treatment. And with fast pas lines they are used to seeing people going up through the line quicker. Universal might be a bit more tricky though. They are not as good at being trained to talk to kids and they don’t do fast pass unless you pay for it. I have heard stories of people getting yelled at for being rich when they bypass the line since only people who pay more can do it. So I hope they have a good way to handle that.
Wonderful post. Are just the 4 of you going? If you can swing it I’d recommend bringing some grandparents along in case one girl decides she wants to go back early. My biggest “tip” for Disney is to PLAN (which you’re doing). We planned 1/2 days at the parks, afternoons at the pool, every dinner (we ate diners and breakfasts at the condo to make our schedule more normal) and budget one “down” day. There will be tears in Disney. But do you know that when that happens you get free stuff? Penny had two meltdowns, 1 resulted in cupcakes at an Animal Kingdom pizza place and 1 resulted in Fast Passes for Toy Story. Disney hates to see kids cry – can you imagine if a cancer kid was crying?! I was honestly surprised what a great family vacation it was and we kept our expectations of what we could “do” in any given day low which really helped. Definiltey bring a princess dress for each – you can get free “fairy dust” for their hair in the dress shop right near Cinderella’s castle. It was much more cost friendly than hitting the Bibbidee Bop salon. I think Elsa is going to be so awed she will not feel left out. We had a birthday for Jo while we were there and none of her siblings nor cousins really noticed the extra attention – too much to see and do. Have a wonderful time – I hope it is magical!
Great post. Have an amazing trip. I don’t have any doubt it will be magical because you guys will bring the magic with you.
I used to work at Disney and the “make a wish” buttons are not super conspicuous so I don’t think it will be in neon as much as you imagine. The cast members are used to seeing the kids as much as one family per day, and are used to treating all guests as special – not just singling out the kid with the button. 🙂 Also, the entrances to hop in line in front of other people are usually pretty inconspicuous and won’t be raising a big flag for people to stare at you or anything so don’t worry there either!
I can’t wait to see pictures!!! 🙂
This is beautiful Jane! You ALL really deserve to have a wonderful time and I also think Elsa will have such a blast, and be so happy to have her twin by her side, that it should be amazing for all of you. Can’t wait to hear all about it!
We’re frequent Disney-goers. (My husband estimates that he’s been at least once a year every year of his 40 years on this earth, and probably close to 60 times total. I married into the madness, but have come to embrace The Mouse.)
I tend to agree with April – one of the reasons we go back compulsively is because it is never anything but magical for all kids. (Okay – and me, too.) I can think of a few times I’ve noticed children who are developmentally different – Disney accommodates wheelchairs, etc., better than any place I’ve ever been – but the extent of my thought has been to notice how quietly it was done.
But regular ol’ Make a Wish families? No way. You’re probably completely normal by Disney standards, even if everything in your life feels otherwise.
Oh, and did you know the new Disney movie, Frozen, includes a snow queen character called Elsa? She’s totally royal, even before you get to the Magic Kingdom …
Can’t wait to hear about the trip!
I hope you have a wonderful time and can forget all the ickiness for one day.
Get brunch at The Crystal Palace. You’ll be happy you did.
Woot, I will cealtinry put this to good use!
Jane, I enjoy the honesty of your posts. April’s response made me feel better. I’m sure your family will enjoy the time together. Cheryl Ringen was just there with her two 5 year old girls. They actually celebrated their 5th birthday in Disney.
Elsa is a rock star no matter what character sees is because her parents know
It. I will never in my life forget the story of Elsa taking the hand of the police officer to bring him in to help her mommy. Elsa is a brave, superb young lady who will do great things.
I’m so excited for all of you and your upcoming trip! We were just there at the end of May and it was amazing.
One thing I can tel you… EVERY kid feels special at Disney World. Heck, adults feel special there too. And they see a lot of Wish families and they see A LOT of kids. They are pros with kids and they’ve seen it all. You won’t have a care in the world while you’re there!
My niece who is now seven was diagnosed with leukimia when she was 4 (happy to say she is doing SO great now). My brother’s family went on this same exact make a wish trip and stayed at Give the Kids the World. Everyone was so over the top nice to them and they had such a great trip. You will have a great time and it sounded like they think of everything for the families. I think its nice how Make a Wish thinks about the siblings as well. You will have a great time!!!
Have a great time! As someone who has dealt with a child with cancer, let me say this. People may look – but you have no idea what they are thinking. Before my daughter got cancer, I would see people who had cancer and think – that poor thing. After going through the treatment process, I now see people with cancer and think – what a strong, brave soul they are. So I may look at them now, but it with admiration for their courage and strength, not pity. Elsa’s understanding of the situation goes to show what great parenting and love you have given both your children.
