Temps are in the low teens here in Boston right now. I’m not a wimp about winter, but I’m not a fan of when it gets frigid like this. Today, though, I couldn’t care less. It just makes it all that much sweeter that tomorrow morning we head for sunny, 80-degree Los Angeles. Woohooo!
I’ve never been to LA before, and I think this brief trip out is going to give me a completely skewed view of what it’s like. While we’ll be spending the first night with pals in Pasadena and Alastair will be doing a kids show the next the morning, the rest of the weekend is going to be full-on glamor, complete with A-list celebrities, designer gowns, red carpets and champagne. (OK, I don’t know for sure about the champagne, but it sounds good. And it’s not improbable that we’ll encounter some, right?) Grammys, baby. Grammys.
A lot of people have asked if they can watch for us on TV on Sunday night during the awards. In fact, the children’s music category—along with the grand majority of the other Grammy award categories, including comedy, alternative, jazz, rap, folk, classical, gospel, Latin, etc.— will not be given out during the telecast show, but during a ceremony a few hours earlier.
If you want to see it, it will be broadcast at Grammy.com/live. Red carpet coverage starts at 3 EST, (Noon pacific) and the ceremony is from 4-6 EST. We’re told that the children’s category is announced fairly early on. And get this: the host is Cyndi Lauper! Who has a place of honor in my life, along with Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Wham and Billy Joel, because hers was one of the very first albums I ever bought. (On cassette, naturally.)
After that show, we will be headed over to the craziness that is the telecast, but we probably won’t have great seats (it’s in the Staples Center, which is ginormous) so the chances of us getting caught in any camera pans over the audience are next to nil.
I’m going to try not to be a share-o-holic while I’m there — live in the moment and all — but I’ll inevitably tweet a few things and post some stuff on Facebook during the proceedings. Especially if I can get Tig Notaro to take a selfie with me. Or Robert Plant. Or pretty much anyone who’s more famous than me (not counting my husband).
Digression: I don’t like the word “selfie.” It sounds sort of dirty, doesn’t it? And I don’t like that it’s become a “thing.” People have been taking pictures of themselves for as long as there have been phones with cameras in them. Why is this now part of pop culture? Who gives a hoot? Get off my lawn, you damned kids!
So, what will I be wearing in the #selfies I take and post on Twitter, because I’m trendy like that? Well, on Saturday evening at the nominees reception I’ll be wearing an adorable little black Cynthia Rowley dress I got at Marshall’s for $19.99. Because that’s how I roll most of the time. On Sunday, though, I’ll be wearing an elegant lace and sequin Tadashi Shoji dress I bought for er, a bit more than that but not an insane amount, at Bloomingdales.
I discovered after I bought it, via your pal and mine, Google, that Octavia Spencer wears Tadashi Shoji to a lot of events, as do other celebs. Which makes me feel just a little bit A-list-y myself. I’m a nobody, so nobody’s going to ask me “what I’m wearing.” (We civilians say, “where did you get your dress,” don’t we.) But it’s fun knowing that if they did, I’d have a Hollywoody answer. Tee hee.
So I’m (obviously) feeling all giddy and starry-eyed about the glamor portion of this trip. But the other thing I’m thrilled about is the opportunity to get away with Alastair for a few days. We haven’t spent a single night away together since Clio’s illness. (Not that we’d had much chance to do it before than, either…)
But to get to have three whole nights, just us, is just heavenly. We are forever indebted to Alastair’s parents, who are taking care of the girls for the weekend. Two spirited seven-year-olds, one requiring twice-daily medications, nightly visits from a nurse for blood thinner shots, and extra vigilance in general, is an immense undertaking. And we are immensely grateful.
We’re also immensely grateful to all the people who have supported this album, whether by donating funds, buying copies, spreading the word, or just cheering us on. It’s gotten into the hands of hundreds of patients and their families, giving them something to smile about and groove to in the midst of their cancer ordeal.
Hey, that sounded like an acceptance speech. I should write it down on an index card for Alastair, just in case.
But now, here comes the music, and the pretty girl to escort me off the stage. Which is good, because I need my beauty sleep. See you next week. Pictures and anecdotes to abound!
Best of luck to you!!!!! I haven’t fingers crossed!!
How fun! It’s supposed to warm up on Saturday even more! Should be perfect Grammy weather! And since you’ll be downtown…if you can…head over to the bar at the top of the Standard Hotel. It’s outside and very, very hip and cool. They have these little “love pods,” perfect for you to snuggle a bit. Make sure to excuse yourself to the restroom up there as well to wash your hands. (Huh???) Trust me. It is the coolest design feature ever.
So excited for you! Have an amazing time and FINGERS CROSSED!
I believe the correct phrase is: “WHO are you wearing?”
Wait. That sounds weird.
Have an amazing time.
Oh, yeah! You’re totally right! You sounded like Joan Rivers just then!
Crossing everything for you. It would be so cool. Enjoy!
That is so exciting , good luck and hope you have a blast!
So excited for you, Jane!!! Fingers crossed! No matter what the outcome, have a ball, take tons of pics, not too many selfies (ha!), and savor the adventure of it all. Richly deserved!
Good luck and I hope you win! Have a great trip!
I am so excited for you! You are going to have a wonderful time and I can’t wait to hear all about it!
How exciting! Can’t wait to hear all about it. Good luck to Alastair.
Jane – I couldn’t agree with you more about the whole ‘selfie’ thing. It does sound dirty, and I pretty much decided not to include it in my vocabulary. Apparently though, taking a picture of yourself was just ‘discovered’ by today’s teen…….but let’s face it, they do know everything. Nothing happens until it happens to them. Remember those days? I remember I knew everything, and then it took another 20 years for me to realize how naive and ridiculous I was ‘back then’! 🙂
I’m not sure if I’m more excited for the Grammy portion or the three nights away with your husband portion! I hope it is all wonderful!
Ahhhhh! SO excited for you! Have such a wonderful, magical, romantic time with your husband!
Have fun!!! Can’t wait to see your pics and tweets.
Have fun and enjoy your time with your husband!!!! and Good Luck!
